— The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce joined community leaders, local officials, and residents on Monday, November 3, 2025, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Mitchell County Recreation Center in Bakersville.

A large group of community members gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a significant milestone for Mitchell County and showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting health, wellness, and youth development.

The new Recreation Center features a spacious gymnasium designed for Parks and Recreation team games and practices, a new concession stand, and modern offices to better serve the department and community programs.

“This new facility is more than a building—it’s an investment in our young people and our community’s future,” Bill Slagle, Mitchell County Chamber/EDC Director. “Having a dedicated space for recreation gives our youth a safe, positive environment to learn teamwork, build confidence, and stay active.”

Following the ribbon cutting, attendees were invited to tour the new facility, exploring the modern gym space, updated amenities, and improved areas for staff and community programming.

The Recreation Center will serve as a hub for youth sports, fitness activities, and community gatherings throughout the year, strengthening the county’s Parks and Recreation program and encouraging residents of all ages to engage in healthy, active lifestyles.

The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce was proud to host the ribbon cutting, continuing its mission to celebrate growth, community investment, and initiatives that improve quality of life for Mitchell County residents.
