The Mitchell County Economic Development Commission (MCEDC) is closely monitoring the recent announcement that Baxter Healthcare has reduced its workforce by approximately 3%, totaling around 90 employees, at its McDowell County facility. The reduction may affect workers who reside in neighboring Mitchell County.
Baxter Healthcare has long been a significant regional employer, and employees a significant number of Mitchell County residents that commute to the North Cove location. Any reduction of this magnitude has the potential to impact individual workers, their families, and the broader regional economy.
“Our thoughts are with the employees and families affected by this announcement,” said Bill Slagle, Executive Director of the Mitchell County Economic Development Commission. “When a major employer in our region makes a decision like this, the effects ripple into neighboring communities. We want Mitchell County residents impacted by this layoff to know that the Chamber and EDC stand ready to assist in any way we can.”
The MCEDC is actively coordinating with regional partners, including workforce development agencies, neighboring economic development organizations, and state resources, to ensure displaced workers have access to support services. These include employment assistance, retraining opportunities, and connections to local and regional job openings.
“Our priority is to support our residents during this uncertain time,” Slagle added. “We are committed to helping affected workers transition as smoothly as possible and to continuing to strengthen Mitchell County’s economic resilience.”
Mitchell County residents impacted by the Baxter Healthcare layoffs are encouraged to reach out to the Mitchell County Economic Development Commission or the Chamber of Commerce for available resources and assistance. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
